  7.    I've been reviewing the contents of our GEOS libraries, trying to weed out
  8. any obsolete files, and trying to strengthen areas where we're weak.  I've
  9. recently added Jeff Fox's fonts to LIB 13, because I saw that we didn't have
  10. enough fonts.  I've found another weakness, but I can't fix this without your
  11. help.
  12.    The weakness is printer drivers.  There are many good, non-BSW printer
  13. drivers available now, and we don't have enough of them.  The reason I need
  14. your help is simple: I can't be sure about the quality of a driver, unless it
  15. works on my printer.  Even if we had the world's largest collection of drivers
  16. for Olivetti PR2300, we'd still be weak.  <grin>
  17.    So, if you are using a non-BSW driver, and you like the way it works, I'm
  18. asking you to share it with all the other GEOS users on CBMART.  If enough of
  19. you will do this, we'll have a wealth of good drivers available, and I'll be
  20. able to move on to some other topic with a clear conscience.  <grin>
  21.    As always, time spent uploading to our libraries is free.  Thanks in advance

  35. Ed; just read the message about needing printer drivers with considerable
  36. interest and amusement....... Would like to know if that applies ONLY to
  37. non-BSW drivers- I would be glad to upload the whole mess that I got with my
  38. Geos 128, if it is permissable to do so; I suspect that there a few drivers
  39. that other folks could use, ie, laserprinter drivers, Imagewriters, Epson LQs,
  40. etc.  Also, I'm wondering about the question of "trading" programs between here
  41. and Q-Link, since BSW saw fit to put all of their support on that system.  I
  42. know that I would be delighted (!!) to pay someone a few dollars for the
  43. TROUBLE of moving a serial printer driver, or driver writer program, over to

  54.    I'm mainly interested in good, non-BSW stuff, since I assume most of our
  55. members have, or will, upgrade to 2.0, and will have all the good drivers
  56. available there for themselves.  What I'm really looking for here is drivers
  57. that the uploaders themselves use and enjoy.  As I said in the message, it's
  58. impossible to test the little devils if you don't have the appropriate printer,
  59. so I'm looking to take advantage of the expertise of our members with their own
  60. printers.

  69. Ed; I don't think that you're going to get much response with home-brew
  70. drivers, for much the same reason that you've had to make the request: there's
  71. not enough demand to justify a supply, and there isn't enough 'how-to',
  72. start-up information for beginners (such as me!) to attempt it.  Granted, I
  73. started to do it, but QUICKLY ran into the snag of "what the heck is THIS
  74. for?". Most folks have a printer that is either directly supported, or is able
  75. to emulate something that IS supported; such as my old Gemini 10-X; not much
  76. available for the 10-X, but it emulated an Epson FX-80, so...... I just don't
  77. think that there are enough of us "screwballs" that want to know how to get
  78. inside something so we can "massage" it to fit our own needs/tastes for you to
  79. be able to get much response.  In this particular case, BSW's documentation is
  80. wretched, the other sources aren't easy to find, and even if you DO find them,
  81. there's no assurance that what they're advertising is what you REALLY want; you
  82. just have to pay your money, and take your chances.  That's pretty much what
  83. I'm going to have to do with GeoWorld, and their disks; as well as with the
  84. Geos Utilities that RUN is offering- pay my money, and hope that what I get
  85. will really do what they're IMPLYING (but not outright saying!) it will do. If
  86. I could get enough documentation together (at least, enough to tell me what a
  87. printer driver is SUPPOSED to do, and is SUPPOSED to have in it, and WHERE
  88. those things are SUPPOSED to be), then I'd give a shot at writing a program
  89. that would let people make their own drivers.  But I'd bet you wouldn't find
  90. many takers, because for most people "close is good enough", ie, Epson vs.
  91. Gemini, etc. So, I wouldn't expect a whole lot of response to your message-
  92. though I would be MOST pleasantly surprised if you did. I wish you luck,

  101. I get the impression that BSW does not mind that much if things like printer
  102. drivers are uploaded here. I asked GEORON and he said that the BSW rep he asked
  103. had no objection to my uploading the ASCII Only printer driver. A long time
  104. back, I uploaded my modified MT Spirit-80 which uses a better line feed spacing
  105. and sets the device number to 5. I have pondered making a patch program to do
  106. this automatically for any printer driver, but haven't had the time to look
  107. through all the various files and decipher the commands. Tony

  115. I've just talked with GeoRep GHW (GH Wells), he informed me that the Print
  116. Drivers created by BSW, and BSW Print Drivers that have been patched can be
  117. uploaded to CIS.  BSW feels that the Print Drivers should be freely
  118. distributed, and aren't a major source of income for them.   Also, uploaders
  119. should be sure to get the Authuor's permission for uploading non-BSW Print
  120. Drivers.
  121.  Also, I must mention that there are too many BSW Print Drivers for ME to
  122. upload to CIS.  I would like to ask for the help of other Q-linkers in
  123. uploading the BSW Print Drivers.  I'm going to upload the FX-80, MX-80, and the
  124. GeoPrint Cable versions of these drivers. : GeoRon.

  134.    That's good news about the BSW and modified BSW drivers.  The download
  135. activity on the ASCII Only driver suggests to me that a fair number of our
  136. members may not have upgraded to 2.0 yet, so even the drivers new to the 2.0
  137. disks may be of value, and I'm sure the modified ones will.  What I most want
  138. is for our members to upload drivers that they are using, that they know work
  139. well.  Certainly I don't expect (or want) people to spend time downloading
  140. drivers from Q just to upload them here.  I'll be looking forward to your
  141. uploads!

  150.  It should be noted that BSW released a disk of Print Drivers which weren't
  151. included with GEOS 2.0.  The driver are upgrades, and special Double, quad,
  152. geoCable, and reduced drivers. : GeoRon.

  160. There are only a few non-BSW Print drivers, BUT there alot of PATCHED versions
  161. of BSW Drivers floating around.  Most of the patching was done by Users and
  162. correct problems with oddball printers.
